National 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship

Sports production often happens far from the spotlight, but during the National 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship, every decision behind the scenes plays a crucial role in bringing the action to fans across the country. Working remotely as a technical director and producer for Next Level Rugby, I was responsible for helping deliver one of the premier collegiate rugby tournaments in the United States.

Over the course of three days, I directed and produced nearly 15 matches each day, coordinating camera feeds, graphics, replays, and overall show flow from hundreds of miles away. The fast-paced nature of rugby sevens, with its quick possessions and constant momentum swings, required precise timing and constant communication between commentators, camera operators, replay personnel, and production staff. Each broadcast had to maintain a professional look and feel while accommodating the unique storylines, teams, and energy that each matchup brought to the tournament.

By leveraging reliable communication systems and cloud-based production tools, the Next Level Rugby team was able to deliver comprehensive coverage of one of collegiate rugby’s biggest events. The National 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship was not only an opportunity to showcase elite athletic competition, but also a testament to the teamwork and coordination required behind the scenes. Producing over 40 rugby games in just three days was an intense challenge, but one that highlighted the power of remote broadcasting and the dedication required to execute live sports at a high level.

PGA TOUR - The Drop

As part of the production team for The Drop, a weekly 30-minute PGA TOUR highlights and recap program, I operate Ross XPression graphics integrated with the Ross Tessera multi-display system to manage the show’s studio environment. The program delivers coverage of tournament highlights, player storylines, rankings, and analysis from across the PGA TOUR.

My responsibilities include controlling and updating multiple display surfaces throughout the set, including the North, South, East, West, and Desk displays. Working within a live-to-tape workflow, I execute real-time graphic and display transitions that align with each segment’s content and creative direction.

In collaboration with producers, directors, and the control room team, I respond to changing editorial needs by manipulating studio displays on the fly, ensuring seamless visual continuity throughout the broadcast. The role demands strong technical proficiency, effective communication, and the ability to perform under the fast-paced conditions of live television production.

A Sporting Chance

“A Sporting Chance” is a mini-documentary series that follows the Sporting JAX women’s soccer team as they compete in the USL W League while vying for a place on the club’s future USL Super League roster. Featuring a talented mix of collegiate and high school players, the series captures the hard work, determination, and competition that define the team’s journey.

Beyond the action on the field, “A Sporting Chance” highlights the relationships formed between local and international players as they train, compete, and adapt to life as teammates. Through exclusive behind-the-scenes access, the series showcases the friendships, challenges, and shared ambition that unite Sporting JAX’s next generation of athletes.

Paris 2024 Olympics - Rugby Sevens

Stade de France was the site to the biggest Rugby sevens event in history. France men’s won their first gold medal of the Olympic games in Rugby and USA women’s won the the bronze medal in a nail-biting last second try. But what happens behind the scenes for NBC Sports to pull this off? Here is my story of working as a statistician for the 2024 Paris Olympics in Rugby Sevens.

My Station

Where I would find all the stats per game and prepare the talent for their games

NBC had an undertaking with the Paris Olympics. Alot of logistics and content to be shown. Most of the content was created, not in Paris, but in Stamford, Connecticut, home of NBC Sports. There, all the technical work would happen to show the viewers all the events taking place during the Olympics. What the viewers did not know, is that there were two feeds happening: The World Feed (Peacock) and the Network Feed (NBC, USA, etc). This way viewers can watch each event start to finish by streaming (Peacock), but when they wanted to go on network TV, they used different off-tube commentary to move in and out of events, and commercial content. I was working with the off-tube crew for the Rugby Sevens events.

Our production crew worked on specific games during the Rugby Sevens men’s and women’s matches. Games that would draw more viewership. For the talent, they wish they could have been inside Stade de France with the roaring 65,000+ fans going crazy for Rugby Sevens. But for NBC, this was a cost-effective option with the amount of events taken place during the Olympics. Trust me, I wish I was in Paris as well!, but the off-tube production was just as exciting with a good team working around you.

Our days would fluctuate depending on how the Olympic games were going and the different story lines taking place. Also depended on how the USA teams did. Unfortunately, the USA men got knocked out of the tournament early on in knock-out play. The men’s tournament did end with France winning the gold with the biggest story line was World Rugby Player of the Year, Antoine Dupont, playing for France and being the X-factor to lead them to Gold. After the men’s tournament ended, it moved straight to the women, which was even more electric!

I don’t think the US audience was prepared for how well the USA women would perform. With no time remaining, Spiff Sedrick breaks a tackle and stiff-arm her away to the game-winning try and for Bronze! It was the single most exciting USA Rugby play in history. The sudden rise of Rugby Sevens and USA Rugby player Ilona Maher (now over 3.5 million followers on social media, most of any rugby player ever) caught the attention of many US viewers. One even pledged 4 million dollars to the growth of USA Rugby.

Working the 2024 Paris Olympics will be one I will remember for some time. It takes a village at NBC Sports to put it all together for the viewing audience. Everyone there was hard-working and helpful. A top-class organization with everyone having the same goal in mind. Deliver the audience, high-quality sports content!

Jacksonville University ESPN broadcasting

Gemstone Media was commissioned to take over the ESPN broadcasts at Jacksonville University. They had the broadcasting tools but needed the guidance and professionalism to pull off a full athletics calendar year. This was an undertaking as there was no foundation laid and which meant we were essentially starting from scratch. With help from my boss, I was able to make proper upgrades to the production truck and add equipment to ensure the season was going to be a success. But it was going to be a challenge none the less.

A major problem we had to overcome was the infrastructure at all of the sporting venues. Most had never been rigged for TV broadcasting and If they were, it had not been used for many years.. The concern was doing events back-to-back days but having to cable each venue every time, which can be timely. Our solution was coming in before the season and cable select venues in order to increase productivity and eliminate the need for each broadcast. The result was a success and helped us tremendously throughout the season, bouncing the truck to different venues.

A majority of the working force behind each show was JU students. Through federal work study and on-campus employment, we were able to staff all events. The start of the season had its up and downs with student involvement. A lot of them had not been taught proper ways to running the broadcast equipment, which led to unnecessary damage. The re-learning process took some time, but with the help of colleagues and patience, the students started to understand and get a better feel for each broadcast. I was even able to upgrade a few of the students inside the truck to enhance their broadcasting skills even more, depending on the skill set and involvement of each show. You could tell the enjoyment they would get out of a properly and professionally run broadcast. Throughout the season, the students that stuck with it got rewarded with working on a linear show that aired locally on CW-17 here in the Jacksonville market. The students that showcased and decided to stay for the summer are now working freelance for Gemstone Media on multiple live-streaming events before the start of the next season.

Dolphins Broadcasting put on 84 ESPN broadcasts throughout the sporting season, that were high-level shows, mainly student run. Its exciting to see the progression of each of the students as well as the freelancers that came in to assist. REMI TD for the NBA in VR

In the dynamic world of sports broadcasting, the convergence of technology and innovation has reshaped the way fans engage with their favorite teams. As a remote technical director for the NBA immersed in the realm of Virtual Reality (VR) via META, I found myself at the forefront of this transformative journey. Working with the company Media Monks, I was able to remote into a Blackmagic ATEM switcher, paired with the software Central Control (a software that allows you to control multiple device via IP), all from the comfort of my office space at home.

Throughout the 2023-24 season, we upgraded the production from a TD standpoint by allowing us to control audio levels and view all applications from a single web source. As we look to the future, the possibilities for innovation are boundless, promising an even more immersive and engaging experience for sports enthusiasts around the world.

A new beginning with the Evertz Dreamcatcher

Looking back at the 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars season with this video montage of highlights throughout the football year. It was one to remember as the Jaguars made their way to the AFC Divisional playoff game. It was also my first year on the Evertz Dreamcatcher, which I really enjoyed. Alot different from other replay machines I had used in the past, but similar to an EVS machine. I couldn’t have accomplished it without my replay team: Cory Gaynor & Kyle Parsons; who helped and pushed me through it all.

CIAA Tournament 2023

Got to travel to Baltimore, MD for the 2023 CIAA Tournament. Both Men & Women competed in this 5 day long tournament to crown the CIAA Championship. All games were broadcasted to ESPN+ as well as the Women’s Championship game on ESPNU. My job on the broadcasts was Xpression OP (CH)& Scorebug OP (Dashboard). Over 22 games broadcasted and alot learned from the ESPN CBB Xpression package.

A final goodbye to the Abekas Mira replay system from Jaguars Gameday

Before the start of the 2020 Jaguars season, I was asked to join the Replay team in the control room for Jaguars Gameday. I had experience with the Abekas Mira replay system prior, but not to this scale. Throughout the year, I tuned my skills on the machine and became pretty good at building video packages. When the 2021 season came around, I had the system mastered and was able to cut up some fast, yet engaging packages. Going into the 2022 season, the Jaguars decided to upgrade to the Evertz Dreamcatcher replay system. The video above is to pay homage to the Abekas Mira, the machine that got me in the door in the control room for the Jags.

The tournament is designed to showcase high school rugby players to colleges and pro teams to recruitment and scholarship opportunities. More House Media teamed up with iMint Media to live-stream broadcast Field #1 for the entire tournament. All games were streamed LIVE on The Rugby Network, which is USA’s biggest OTT network, streaming only Rugby all the time.
